Apple’s premium status is not limited to just the base of fans looking for iPhone, even thieves in New York place the jesus phone on top of their priority list. Businessinsider has an interesting report on thieves favoring iPhone. The report cites thieves attacking students, taking away the iPhone from one of them and refusing to steal an Android device. Hard to believe if thieves would show such a behavior, but it is quite possible we believe. iPhone sells fast, the depreciation is slow and on the other hand selling old Droid devices is tough given the flood in the market.
The smartphone market has taken a hit with Blackberry, Motorola, Nokia, Sony Ericsson and several other companies finding it tough to find market traction. And the new of Apple’s iPhone being preferred by thieves as well is only embarrassing for everyone else. A Blackberry Curve sells for less than Rs 5000 in the Mumbai resale market, that speaks volumes for where the one premium business phone today stands.
Apple has worked to enhance its find my iPhone technology (which went free sometime back) and patents have suggested some crazy security measures for iOS devices. However for now, as a the second hand market demands iPhones, thieves know exactly what to target. It is perhaps easy for them to sell of these devices in the grey market and the good resale value ensures that they get an amount which is several folds of what a low end Blackberry would fetch.
